Tsogo Sun is the largest hotel and gaming group in South Africa and is majority owned by the fully empowered Tsogo Investment Holding Company. The Tsogo Sun Group was formed as the result of a successful empowerment deal between Tsogo Investments, which owned Tsogo Gaming, and SABMiller, which owned Southern Sun. The empowerment deal resulted in the establishment of Tsogo Sun Holdings and was hailed as a landmark empowerment deal due to its significant contribution to the transformation of the hotel and gaming industry in South Africa.
Tsogo Sun continues to be a pioneer and leader in the empowerment of previously disadvantaged people, businesses and communities in South Africa. Tsogo Sun Holdings Limited currently holds a Level 2 B-BBEE Contributor Status and received 88.57 points for its 2012 results. Many of the initiatives undertaken by Tsogo Sun serve as leading examples for empowerment in South Africa, such as the Tsogo Sun Academy, which was created to transfer skills to employees from previously disadvantaged communities. Another transformation initiative of the Group is the Tsogo Sun Book-A-Guesthouse enterprise development programme, which provides business support to women entrepreneurs in the South African tourism industry.
Since its inception in the nineties, when no clear black economic guidelines were in place, Tsogo Sun has pioneered the way for fair inclusion and equal opportunities in all aspects of the business. Tsogo Sun's economic empowerment strategy has always been based on the fundamental desire to do the right thing. It is therefore no surprise that all of the Group's subsidiaries have to date achieved Level 3 and Level 2 contributor status for black economic empowerment.
