The Socio Economic Development (SED) programme of Tsogo Sun guides its social responsibility contributions and activities to ensure that the company makes a positive impact on communities in the areas where it operates. The group has three flagship Corporate Social investment (CSI) programmes, through which it seeks to use its abilities and influence to become an instrument of positive social change.
The flagship programmes are:
- Tsogo Sun Sports Academy
- Tsogo Sun Performing Arts Academy
- Tsogo Sun Hospitality Academy
More than 80% of the Company’s CSI activities and funding are channelled to support disadvantaged youth (ages 1 to 25) in underprivileged communities in South Africa through the Group’s flagship CSI programmes.
Although each flagship has a different focus, all three have been designed to support the broader schooling curriculum and in particular the need for extracurricular activity as outlined by the South African Department of Education. By concentrating on the provision of extracurricular activities, the company believes that it can deliver essential life skills orientation, healthcare and wellness as an addition to the formal school learning syllabus and thus help the beneficiaries (disadvantaged South African youth) to build a foundation that will enable them to reach their full potential.
The projects undertaken within each flagship seek maximum community participation and ensure that as many beneficiaries as possible are impacted. Specific targets to be achieved in terms of beneficiaries impacted are determined on the value of spend and type of project.
Tsogo Sun’s social responsibility ethos is implemented at property level, with a strong emphasis on volunteerism and employee involvement. We measure our performance in accordance with the DTI Codes of Good Practice target for the BBBEE element of the scorecard, being 1% NPAT annually. Our verified performance has consistently exceeded target over the last three years.
