Your Kruger National Park Guide
The park is made up of four different regions - Far North, Northern, Central and Southern. The Far North Region, especially north of Punda Maria, is popular for the spectacular boabab trees, the rare nyala, sable, roan and eland buck and predators like lions, cheetah and leopard are seen on a fairly regular basis. The Central Region boasts the Olifants River and the Olifant’s camp offers a spectacular panoramic view of this stunning river. The Central Region is home to a lot of game and has some of the most beautiful landscapes of the park. The Southern Region is known for being lion country, so you have a higher chance of spotting this majestic creature here; as well as the black or white rhino as it is home to the biggest population of rhinos.
The Southern Region is most popular with tourists as this is one of the best regions for game viewing in the park. The lush bush attracts more animals than the dry and sparse northern regions of the park. The Southern Region is also popular due to it being more accessible than the Far North and Northern Region. It is home to most of the Kruger’s white rhino and the rocky habitat makes it ideal for leopards, so keep your eyes peeled for this elusive big cat.
The Phabeni Gate is the best entrance for those coming from the Hazyview area. The gates are opened in the months of January, February, November and December from 05h30 to 18h30; in March and October, 05h30 to 18h00; in April, August and September 06h00 to 18h00 and in May, June and July, 06h00 to 17h30.
Safari Tips and Tricks
We have rounded up our top tips and tricks to make your visit to the Kruger Park hassle free and unforgettable.
- Just for The Day
Since Kruger is so popular, entry for day visitors is on a first come first serve basis, so be sure to arrive at the gate as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
- The Wild Card
Depending on the size of your family and the number of days you plan to visit the park, it may be worth considering purchasing a Wild Card. This will allow you free entrance into the park for an entire year.
- Don’t Forget the Map
It is highly advisable for you to obtain a map from the entrance gate office, this will allow you to plan your safari route and find the best ‘get-out’ points.
- Plan your Safari Route
The speed limit is 40kmph which makes getting places slow, so make sure to plan your route to allow time to reach the gate with ample time before it closes.
- Keeping Mozzies at Bay
Hazyview is a low-risk Malaria area but be sure to take the needed precautions – such as mosquito repellent - especially in summer and even during the day in the park.
- Picnic Time
If you are planning to spend most of your day in the park, remember to pack a picnic of refreshments. There are a number of picnic spots for you to enjoy, which is the best place for you to go to the toilet or stretch your legs. Remember you are only allowed out of your vehicle at these designated spots! In summer, the park can get very hot in the afternoons, so be sure to take the time to cool down in the shade and drink plenty of fluids to make sure your time in the Kruger is the most enjoyable.
- Capture The Moment
Don’t forget to bring your camera. Capture those wild moments and share it with the family back home. Just don’t forget to take some time out from behind the viewfinder and really savour the moment.
