Mykonos Casino General Manager Marks 30 Years in Gaming
Mykonos Casino General Manager Marks 30 Years in Gaming
This month, Mykonos Casino’s General Manager, Clive Van Groeningen, is celebrating 30 years in the gaming industry.
Van Groeningen got his start as a temporary technician at one of Southern Africa's oldest casinos, shortly after completing his electrical trade qualification. For the first 17 years of his career he supplied his infectious enthusiasm and expertise to casinos all over the country, but has settled at Mykonos Casino for the last 13. Today he counts being involved in the opening of two casinos amongst his many achievements over the past three decades.
The industry has obviously evolved significantly since he first joined it, with casinos becoming more high-tech. “When I started, slot machines were mechanical and now they have become these incredible video-type games. With technology taking over, even the tables have evolved significantly.”
He relishes being part of such an exciting and constantly changing industry. “Over the past 30 years, no two days have ever been the same. I don’t enjoy the mundane 9 to 5 stuff and the gaming industry isn’t like that at all.”
Van Groeningen shares: “My father never really believed that I had a proper job! But It is a fantastic career and I would highly recommend it.”

Sanet Eigelaar is the perfect ingredient to a great Mother’s Month at Mykonos Casino
Mother’s Month celebrations got underway with baking celebrity, Sanet Eigelaar, at Mykonos Casino. The imaginative baking maestro hosted her “Min Tot Heldin” food presentation for 100 enthusiastic guests. The excited ladies packed the Black Pearl Restaurant on Wednesday 3 May.
The former contestant on the reality baking competition, Koekedoor 2 on KykNET and owner of Cup of Cake coffee shop, had 90 minutes of the best baking tips and tricks prepared for guests. Sanet Eigelaar’s theme for the food demonstration, “Min Tot Heldin”, was inspired by the ability to create amazing things from nothing, using a simple baking tool such a muffin pan. Each guest also received a special cake box, with five scrumptious tasters, including black velvet cupcakes with cheese cake filling, banana muffins with butterscotch and other delicious baked eats.
For Sanet, the muffin pan was more than just a baking tool, she feels that “the muffin pan can be used for many different recipes. It is the same with women, we are not just mothers, wives, friends, we have to delve deep to bring out creativeness and to have fun whilst cooking or baking. We all have those days when we feel like a rusted muffin pan, but we must believe in ourselves, to bring out the best we can be.”
It is this attitude, passion and enthusiasm that made the Mother’s Month celebration all the more special. The food presentation was the perfect blend of inspiration, entertainment and heart and was a great baking experience for all guests in attendance.
Natasha Brand, Marketing Manager at Mykonos Casino, says, “Mother’s Month is all about saluting and showing recognition to our moms, our heroes. A recipient of numerous awards, including the joint Vita Award and the Critic's Award - The Dalro - for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, Lizz truly has earned her stripes as one of SA’s darlings.
“Lizz Meiring’s somewhat whacky and classy charm makes Langpad & Lipstiek a hilarious and inspiring show. The stories from her handbag will find resonance in the lives of all women, making this show the perfect choice for ladies on Women’s Day,” says Natasha Brand, Marketing Manager at Mykonos. “We are excited to host this day, where women will come together and share in the hilarious and heartfelt experience that is Lizz’s show.”

Mykonos Casino recently made a R5000 donation to the 7th annual ‘Around the Island Swim’ which took place at Main Beach in Langebaan on Saturday, 16 April 2016.
This brilliant open water swim is divided into categories and takes competitors clockwise around Schaapen Island in Langebaan Lagoon.
The categories this year featured male and female swimmers divided into the age groups 13 years and under and 14 to 30 years and over. Local Langebaan school teams competing also had 3 swimmers representing each school.
The 1.6km race started at 09:30 and the 3.2km, around the Island at 10:30. This meant participants swam parallel to and within 100 metres of the shore making the race more accessible for those who did not want to cross the channel or encounter the kelp at the island.

One of the less explicit songs, Hemel op die Platteland, made history when it became the first Afrikaans song to be play listed on national radio station 5FM.
After releasing hit albums and touring the UK, Netherlands and Belgium, Fokofpolisiekar took a hiatus to focus on solo projects. Francois started performing solo music under his own name before starting Van Coke Kartel in 2007. The West Coast welcomes Jody Williams as she prepares to wow audiences at an exclusive live performance at Mykonos Casino on the 28th of March. The Casino is thrilled to have her for a special one-night only performance which promises to be one of the hottest events on the Western Cape Casino’s annual events calendar.
The former South African idol winner, better known as Jody, became a role model for young aspiring singers when she won the fourth season of the reality TV programme in 2007. At the time she was just 17, making her the youngest winner of the competition so far.
Jody started singing at age nine and by 13 she was receiving vocal training. Her father (whom she has described as her biggest inspiration) immediately recognised her vocal talent. During the six-month-long competition, Jody became known for her compelling renditions of power ballads by artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera.
Says Mykonos Casino Marketing Manager, Natasha Brand, “We are delighted that Jody will be performing live at Mykonos Casino and so excited that the audience will get the opportunity to enjoy her impressive ability to deliver and breathe life into both old and new hits.”
Jody’s platinum-selling album, Just gonna be me, reached #1 on the South African Albums Chart, and spawned three consecutive number one singles on the South African Airplay Chart: Love is all round, Kiss of Life and Wind It. Another hit was Love like this before.
Elements of Pop, R&B, dance and soul can be found in her music, with Jody citing singers Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion as her main musical inspirations and influences.
Audiences can expect to be moved by her powerful voice and energetic stage presence. This show is for one night only and definitely not to be missed.
The show is free for the public and she will be performing from 16:30.

Well-known sexuality and wellbeing expert, Timothy Kieswetter, presents his liberating and inspiring seminar “Unleash Your Inner Sex Goddess” at Mykonos Casino on Friday the 8th of August. The event, part of the casino’s Women’s Month activities, will inspire women to explore their sexuality, become more open and adventurous about sex, and understand its role in healthy relationships.

His message is that sex is not a dirty word. Instead, it is a wonderful gift given to us by God as part of his plan for healthy marriages and relationships.
“There is nothing that we should not be able to talk about,” he says.
His inspiring workshop takes place at the Charlie Noble Restaurant, Mykonos Casino at 16:00. Tickets cost R50 per person and are available at the casino’s Customer Services Desk. For more information contact Reagon Peddie on 0823815535 or Sarilize Schwulst on 0832892630.

Roulette Masters Winner
Winner Takes R2m in Tsogo Sun’s Roulette Masters Tournament
Winner Takes R2m in Tsogo Sun’s Roulette Masters Tournament
The first prize winner of Tsogo Sun’s third annual Roulette Masters is a delighted Gnanasagaren Gounder from Randburg who stayed the course in the exciting group-wide tournament and took home a cool R2 million first prize at the grand finale held at Silverstar on 19 March. Gnanasagaren qualified and represented Silverstar Casino in the West Rand of Johannesburg.
“As in previous years it was a very tense final, with the outright winner only being decided on the last spin. Our congratulations go to Mr Gounder who demonstrated skill and strategy in the adrenaline-fuelled final stages of this highly popular tournament,” says Steve Hight, Tsogo Sun’s Director of Gaming. “Of course, he wasn’t the only winner, and we also congratulate the six other finalists who made it through to the finals and all walked off with cash prizes totalling just under R1.5m.” The seven finalists who made it through the semi-final rounds represented five of the 14 Tsogo Sun properties, namely Silverstar, Suncoast, Queens, Hemingways and The Caledon.
Hight notes that the success of the tournament saw the total prize pool increasing from an initial guaranteed R2.5 million to just over R4 million due to the unprecedented number of buy-ins. “This tournament offers the highest prize money for a Roulette tournament held anywhere within Africa with a buy-in of only R100, and every year we’re thrilled to see the growing enthusiasm for it among players at all our casinos.” The total prize money for the three Roulette Masters tournaments to date amounts to just over R10.1 million.
“It’s extremely gratifying that two of our smaller properties were represented in the finals, as this is one of the greatest benefits of a group-wide tournament of this nature. Under normal circumstances, patrons at casinos in outlying areas would not have the opportunity to compete for such substantial prizes, and this one of strengths of the Tsogo brand,” says Hight.
Second prize of R750 000 was won by a resident of Greyton, Cape Town representing Caledon Casino; third prize of R250 000 went to a resident of Durban North representing Queens Casino; and a winner from Queensburg, Durban representing Hemingways Casino won fourth prize of R150 000. The final three place winners took home R135 000, R125 000 and R78 100 respectively.
Roulette Masters launched on 19 January and qualifying rounds took place at the respective casinos – Montecasino, Gold Reef City and Silverstar in Gauteng; SunCoast, Golden Horse and Blackrock in KZN; The Caledon, Garden Route and Mykonos in the Western Cape; Emnotweni and The Ridge in Mpumalanga; Hemingways and Queens Casino in the Eastern Cape; and Goldfields in the Free State – until 3 March. The unit finals took place on 5 March and 40 hopefuls then went through to the group semi-finals, at Silverstar on 19 March which was whittled down to seven finalists in the grand finale.
Interestingly, the wheels at Tsogo Sun’s 14 casinos spun more than 12 800 times for the duration of the tournament – with every spin of the wheel increasing both the stakes and the nail-biting excitement that is one of the hallmarks of the tournament, for players and spectators alike.
“This tournament continues to grow from strength to strength, and is a highlight on the Tsogo Sun gaming calendar,” says Hight, who adds that Tsogo Sun is committed to delivering memorable experiences to all its guests at all its properties – every time. “We believe our tournaments, which are available to all players with the potential to win big prizes, contribute significantly to this commitment and create an unprecedented level of excitement on our casino gaming floors, adding richly to the entertainment for both players and spectators.”
The final at Silverstar was a glittering affair that saw the semi-finalists and finalists being treated to a VIP experience, with a “live” carpet to welcome the guests, roaming saxophonist, mime, visual poi dancers, and culinary extravagances. “It was a privilege to host the Roulette Masters final at Silverstar Casino,” says Shane Collinson, Operations Director and Complex General Manager of Silverstar. “There is nothing quite like West Rand hospitality and we were delighted to show off our property to players from around the country. A huge congratulations to Mr Gounder for his win, and for representing Silverstar in the final.”

Over 150 people flocked to the resort to shave, spray or stencil their hair in support of CANSA. This was the third consecutive year that Club Mykonos has played host to the annual fundraising event.
“This year’s CANSA Shavathon was well-supported by our local community and the Mykonos Offshore participants. We would like to thank everyone who came down to support this worthy cause. It was heartening to see people, both young and old, enthusiastically getting their hair shaved or sprayed to show solidarity with people affected by cancer.
“All proceeds raised through the CANSA Shavathon event at Club Mykonos will be donated to the local arm of CANSA so that local people affected by the disease will benefit from the fundraiser. Without the contributions and support from the local community this event would never reach its full potential,” says Club Mykonos’s Marketing Manager, Michelle Goldschmidt hopes more people will use the resort to showtheir support for CANSA.
In addition to the donations received from individuals at the Shavathon, donations were received by caring Langebaan-based businesses. The Mykonos Casino, a longtime supporter of CANSA, donated R 4,000 towards the 2014 Shavathon.

Mykonos Casino has hopped onboard as a venue sponsor for the 2014 CANSA Shavathon. This is the third consecutive year that the resort has played host to the event which is held annually to raise awareness and funds for CANSA.
In 2013, around 100 people came to Mykonos Casino to have their heads shaved or sprayed for the CANSA Shavathon. Mykonos Casino’s Marketing Manager, Natasha Brand hopes more people will use the resort to show their support for CANSA.
“The CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s most-supported and best-loved charity events. Each year, we are bowled-over by the sheer number of people who come to the casino to shave or spray their hair to show solidarity with people affected by cancer, and help generate funds.
“We hope to attract even more people this year. Mykonos Casino has ample space to accommodate large crowds. Let’s do it!” she encourages.
This year, being the 11th year that the national CANSA Shavathon has been held, people will have the choice of shaving, spraying or stenciling their hair. Adults can shave, spray or stencil their head for a donation of R50 (or more) and children under 12 years old pay for R25. The activities will be held on Friday, 28 February at the back of the main reception area at Club Mykonos as well as on Saturday, the 1st of March at the Marina, Club Mykonos.
Participants can pay cash to CANSA Shavathon representatives at Mykonos Casino on the day or, to fast track the process, they can make an online donation in advance on www.shavathon.org.za. Those making online donations must remember to take their confirmation email with them when they visit the Shavathon stand at Mykonos Casino. Those who aren’t brave enough to do any of those can choose to pay a “bailout fee”. All funds raised through CANSA Shavathon events will go towards CANSA initiatives.
Mykonos Casino, a long-time supporter of CANSA, recently received an award from the organization in recognition of its unwavering commitment to CANSA in support of its efforts to raise awareness of cancer and provide support services to people affected by the disease. In 2013, Mykonos Casino sponsored R20 000 towards CANSA and played host to the annual CANSA Shavathon.
