Gold Reef City’s Heritage Tour offers unique insight into the historical world of Johannesburg’s gold rush. This interactive history lesson brings to life the founding of Johannesburg and the discovery of gold on the reef – it doesn’t get more real than descending 75 meters underground to discover the riches of South Africa’s history on an underground mine tour or witnessing the magnificent glow of a live gold pour!

  1. Museum Houses & Crush Museum

    • Life in the early 1900’s was a stark contrast to the lives we lead today with many electronic and technological advances. This is brought home in fascinating detail at Gold Reef City.

    • Relive the reality of Johannesburg’s gold mining history in The Oosthuizen House museum, Emily Oosthuizen’s meticulously restored family home. The family relocated from Europe, travelling by ocean liner to South Africa at the height of the gold rush era. This historical home is a window into how they lived, their home schooling and music lessons.

    • Olthaver House, the original Mine Manager’s residence, houses an authentic bioscope, dedicated to showing what life was like during this fascinating period in South Africa’s history.

  2. Train Museum & Bullion Coach
    • A unique piece of Johannesburg history is on display in our Train Museum. One of the world’s last remaining bullion coaches, this heavily fortified coach was used to carry gold bullion between Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from 1911 until 1967, when it was retired. The Bullion coach was built complete with self-contained sleeping quarters, kitchen and bathroom facilities. Today, this unique reminder of times gone by has been restored to mint condition and is definitely worth a visit.

Join your Rich Beginnings virtual tour-guide Veli, a modern-day schoolboy as he takes you on a journey in the company of Joe, a well-weathered prospector from the late 1800s. Pan for elusive specs of gold that hold the promise of wealth the way it used to be done in freezing cold water by hand and experience the euphoria of finding a shiny spec among the dirt.

And for a magical trip down memory lane visit our Museum Houses where you will find Mr Ohlthaver’s House, Dowse House and Oosthuizen House.
