Tete has become a thriving commercial and industrial area in Northern Mozambique. Whether you are here for business or leisure, we invite you to discover some of the highlights of the area.
The discovery of huge coal deposits in Tete province, estimated at 6.7 billion tons, is regarded geologically, as the largest undiscovered coal province in the world. It is estimated that the province could be producing 25% of the world’s cooking coal by 2025.
Coal has brought huge development to Tete’s capital city. Throughout its history, Tete has been the centre of trade dating back to the days before the Portuguese colonial era when it was a Swahili trade centre.
Tete is a 2-hour flight from the country’s capital Maputo and O.R. Tambo International Airport in South Africa. The Chingozi Airport in Tete is serviced by several airlines including Airlink out of O.R. Tambo International, Johannesburg and Moçambique Expresso out of Maputo.
A City of Bridges
A Swahili trade centre before the Portuguese colonial era, Tete continues to dominate the west-central part of the country and region, and is the largest city on the Zambezi. In the local language, Nyungwe, Tete (or Mitete) means “reed”.
Two of the four bridges crossing the Zambezi River in Mozambique are in Tete. Built by the Portuguese in 1973, the one-kilometre Samora Machel Bridge links northern and southern Mozambique, as well as connecting Southern Mozambique to Zambia and Malawi. A second bridge was built south of the city in 2014 to allow traffic on the way to Zambia and Malawi to bypass the city thus reducing traffic through the bustling city.
